enti monastici.
After they considered the general development of the Tuscan monasticism, the authors focus their attention on twelve Benedictine abbeys (four of them were nunneries) of the diocese of Pisa, which were independent until the XIII century. They were established during the big monastic explosion, which took place, not only in Tuscany but generally in Italy, since the last three decades of the X century until the fi rst quarter of the XII. Most of these monasteries disappeared within the XIV or the XV century: only two survived, because they adopted a different religious rule. As they were subjected to the bishop and tightly bound to founder’s family, nunneries were able to live longer and two of them reached even the beginning of the XIX century. This framework fi ts in the general development of the Italian Benedictine monasticism, whose independence not only does not ensure its success but gave rise to a spiritual and temporal decline of the monastic communities. |
