ABSTRACT Seguendo l’accresciuto interesse storiografico per la mobilità, le migrazioni, le vie di comunicazione e gli scambi culturali, il saggio si propone di dare nuovo slancio agli studi sulla presenza degli stranieri “non-italiani” nei monasteri e nei conventi di Roma, e dei dintorni (Grottaferrata, Subiaco, Farfa, Montecassino) per i secoli centrali e il lungo tardo medioevo (inteso fino al Sacco di Roma). Il saggio fornisce nuovi dati presi anche da fonti archivistiche finora poco studiate, che affrontano temi come la composizione prosopografica della popolazione monastica a Roma, i flussi di monaci e frati pellegrini, il ruolo della Curia e dei papi nonché l’attrattiva di Roma come centro di studi universitari e di scambi culturali. I monaci e frati videro e vissero Roma – una città comunque di grande impatto emotivo, ma anche di forti ambiguità nella sua vita quotidiana e nella percezione dei suoi visitatori – fra esperienze religiose e necessità pratiche. Sebben lontana dai noti centri di spiritualità monastica del Nord Europa, la Città Eterna risulta così, almeno per alcune comunità, un laboratorio singolare per lo sviluppo di varie forme della vita religiosa, che ancora necessitano ulteriori ricerche ed approfondamenti. As a result of the increased interest in the history of mobility, migration, communication and cultural exchange, this essay aims to give new impetus to studies on the presence of non-Italians in the monasteries and convents of Rome and of its environs (Grottaferrata, Subiaco, Farfa, Montecassino) with regard to the High and the “Long” Late Middle Ages (i.e., the period up to the Sack of Rome). This essay presents new data, drawn from archival sources so far inadequately studied, addressing topics such as the prosopography of the monastic population of Rome, the fl ow of monks and friars in pilgrimage to Rome, the role of the Curia and of the popes, and the attractiveness of Rome as a center of higher education and cultural exchange. Monks and friars saw and experienced Rome – a city of great emotional impact, but also of strong ambiguities in its daily life and in the perception of its visitors – in ways that refl ected both religious experiences and practical needs. Even if it was far from the renowned centers of monastic spirituality in Northern Europe, the Eternal City was, at least for some communities, a unique laboratory for the development of various forms of religious life, which still require further research and investigation.
