Nel 1723 il clero della cattedrale del vicariato apostolico di Utrecht elesse un vescovo e lo fece consacrare senza l’autorizzazione romana. Da quella data si susseguirono una serie di brevi di condanna, ma anche di tentativi di accordo, documentati dalle carte dell’archivio del Sant’Uffi zio. Nei pronunciamenti del Magistero non appare però che quello utrettino fosse considerato uno “scisma” nel senso rigoroso del termine. La rottura si consumò durante il periodo di Leone XIII, quando la Chiesa di Utrecht si unì ai veterocattolici. In 1723, the clergy of the cathedral of Utrecht’s apostolic vicariate elected and consecrated a bishop without the authorization of Rome. Since that time, it followed a series of sentencing papal Briefs, but also of attempts for an agreement, duly registered by documents kept in the Holy Offi ce’s archives. In the papal pronouncements, anyway, it doesn’t seem that Utrecht’s behaviour was considered rigorously a “schism”. The fi nal break was consummated during the reign of Leo XIII, when the Church of Utrecht joined the Old Catholic Church.
