In the Malatesta folder of the Gonzaga Archive in Mantua is preserved a letter of March 1, 1438, sent by the archbishop of Patras Pandolfo Malatesti to Gianfrancesco Gonzaga, Marquis of Mantua, in the framework of the preparation of the first session of the Council of Ferrara (1438). The letter is an interesting source on the disagreements within the Church of Rome, oscillating between the theory of the conciliar primacy and the pontifical plenitudo potestatis, and on the atmosphere of excitement and hope that the Council could provoke in Western and Eastern Christianity.

Nel carteggio malatestiano dell’Archivio Gonzaga di Mantova sono conservate due lettere del 1 marzo 1438, che, nel clou dei preparativi della prima sessione del concilio di Ferrara (1438), l’arcivescovo Pandolfo Malatesti spedì alla sorella Paola e al marito Gianfrancesco Gonzaga, marchese di Mantova. Le due epistole sono di per sé interessanti, perché testimoniano sia i dissensi maturati all’interno della Chiesa di Roma tra la teoria del primato conciliare e la plenitudo potestatis pontificia, sia il clima di eccitazione e di speranza che lo stesso concilio poteva produrre nella cristianità occidentale e orientale.
