Recent historiography has focused on identifying the themes that over time have given substance to the broader framework of anti-Jesuit literature, with the aim of detecting the most widespread arguments used within the Catholic Church against Company of Jesus. To examine the phenomenon, limited to the Venetian context, this essay focalises on an unpublished text, the treatise of Giovanni Fatò On the hypocrisy of the Jesuits, to be found in a miscellaneous codex of the Herzog August Bibliothek of Wolfenbüttel. This work was written during the period of the interdict in Venice (1606-1607) and is imbued with all those widespread anti- Jesuit stereotypes present in the period of greatest tension between Rome and the Venetian Republic. This essay aims to highlight the most significant passages of the work, structured in twelve chapters with a prologue, and to identify the sources used by the author, to reconstruct the context in which the treatise was conceived and to identify the audience it was intended for.
La storiografia recente si è concentrata in particolare sull’individuazione dei temi che nel corso del tempo hanno dato sostanza alla più ampia cornice della letteratura antigesuitica, con l’intento di comprendere quali siano state le argomentazioni più diffuse all’interno della Chiesa cattolica contro la Compagnia di Gesù. A conferma del fenomeno, ma limitandosi al contesto veneziano, in questo saggio si darà conto di uno scritto inedito, il Trattato di Giovanni Fatò sopra l’hipocrisia de’ Giesuiti, conservato in un codice miscellaneo della Herzog August Bibliothek di Wolfenbüttel (Cod. Guelf. 31.8 Aug. 2°), concepito dal suo autore durante il periodo dell’interdetto (1606-1607) e intriso di tutti quegli stereotipi antigesuiti che si sono consolidati proprio nel momento di maggior tensione tra Roma e la Repubblica. In questo contributo saranno messi in evidenza i passaggi più significativi dell’opera e si cercheranno di individuare le fonti di cui si è servito l’autore per la stesura, al fine di ricostruire il contesto in cui il trattato è stato pensato e di individuare il pubblico al quale era destinato. keywordsAnti-Jesuitism – Giovanni Fatò – Venice – Interdict – Cod.
